Established in the year 1930, Muthukaruppan Harijan Harijan Higher Secondary School is a historic institution located in the heart of Subbammal Puram, Sillankulam, Thoothukudi District, Tamil Nadu. Founded with a noble mission to uplift the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities through education, the school stands as a beacon of opportunity and social empowerment for the underprivileged.
Our institution caters to more than 4600 students—boys and girls—with over 90% of them coming from Scheduled Caste communities. We strongly believe in the transformative power of education and work relentlessly to provide a nurturing and inclusive environment for every learner.
From offering free textbooks, nutritious food, and hostel accommodation to implementing special coaching programs for academically weak students, every initiative at Muthukaruppan Harijan Hr. Sec. School is designed to serve the educational needs of marginalized children. With a dedicated teaching staff, most of whom belong to the SC community themselves, our school fosters a deep sense of belonging, care, and personal growth among students.
The school’s infrastructure includes modern science labs, digital classrooms, a well-equipped library, hygienic restrooms, RO drinking water, CCTV surveillance, a playground, transport facilities, and more. We also integrate yoga, sports, arts, music, and cultural development through co-curricular and extra-curricular activities, ensuring all-round development.
We take pride in continuing the visionary legacy of our founder, serving not only as an educational institution but also as a center of social justice and community empowerment.
Muthukaruppan Memorial Educational Trust is the cornerstone of Muthukaruppan Harijan Higher Secondary School’s continued growth and purpose. Formed to carry forward the ideals of the great social reformer and educational pioneer Mr. Muthukaruppa Kudumban, the trust is deeply committed to educating the marginalized and downtrodden sections of society, especially from SC/ST backgrounds.
Under the leadership of Dr. D.M. Karuppasamy Balamurugan (Chairman), Ms. C. Saroja Karuppasamy (Chief Superintendent), and Dr. R. Nirmala Balamurugan (Secretary), the trust manages the operations and growth of the institution with passion, vision, and transparency. The trust ensures that all activities of the school align with the original mission—to provide accessible, quality, and value-based education to the poorest of the poor.
Inspired by pioneers like Mahatma Jotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule, the Trust believes that education is the first step toward true freedom and equality. Today, the Trust continues to uphold this philosophy by investing in infrastructure, welfare programs, educational innovations, and faculty development to ensure that every child receives a fair chance at a brighter future.
Muthukaruppan Harijan Higher Secondary School was established in 1930 by the visionary social reformer Mr. Muthukaruppa Kudumban, a pioneering leader from the Scheduled Caste community. At a time when education was a privilege of the few, he took a bold step to create a school in the rural village of Sillankulam, Ottapidaram Taluk, Thoothukudi District, Tamil Nadu—exclusively dedicated to the upliftment of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe children.
With no personal gain in mind, Mr. Muthukaruppan’s selfless service and foresight laid the foundation for what would become a powerful platform for thousands of students from marginalized backgrounds. His primary goal was simple yet revolutionary: "To provide educational assistance to poor children, especially those from Scheduled Caste families, who were denied access to quality education."
Over the decades, the school has grown in strength and stature, today educating over 4600 students. This institution is not just a school—it is a movement born out of sacrifice, struggle, and an unwavering belief in equality through education.
Mr. Muthukaruppa Kudumban is considered by many as the first Scheduled Caste individual to start a school for SC children in Tamil Nadu even before Indian independence—a legacy the school community proudly upholds. Plans are underway to honor his memory at the national level.
His life’s mission continues to guide every initiative of the school, making Muthukaruppan Harijan Higher Secondary School a proud monument of inclusive education and social change.
Our mission is to empower underprivileged children—especially from Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities—by providing access to high-quality, inclusive, and value-based education. We are committed to nurturing the intellectual, emotional, social, and moral development of every child, thereby creating confident, compassionate, and responsible citizens of tomorrow.
Our vision is to be a nationally recognized institution for social upliftment through education, rooted in equality, dignity, and opportunity. We envision a future where no child is denied learning due to their socio-economic background, and where every student rises to their fullest potential with pride, purpose, and perseverance.
This motto reflects our unwavering commitment to making education accessible to the marginalized, helping them unlock their potential, and guiding them toward a life of dignity, knowledge, and service.
We believe every child—regardless of background, caste, or gender—has the right to quality education in a nurturing environment.
Punctuality, respect, and personal responsibility are the pillars of our student culture. We believe that discipline builds character and focus.
Inspired by our founder’s vision, we are dedicated to promoting social justice through inclusive learning and equal opportunities.
